(Skills and Knowledge of Intervention for Language Learning Success)
Project SKILLS is a parent-directed intervention program for parents of children with ASD. The project can be completed in person or via ZOOM video conferencing. We will do the initial group session at ACN and then follow-up with scheduling the 7 individual sessions.
The initial 2 hour group training that we will do at ACN is just for the parents. It will include an overview of the program and introduction to specific interactive teaching techniques such as communicative temptations for language development, expansion of child utterances, and modeling appropriate language.
If interested, parents can sign up for a weekly 1-hour time slot to do 7 sessions of individual therapy. These individual sessions are for both the parent and the child. During those sessions, parents will get training in specific language-facilitating techniques and then coaching while implementing the techniques with their child. Areas targeted include: social communication, expressive language, social imitation, and play. These sessions will start at the end of October.
